St Teresa’s School, founded in 1930 by the Sisters of Mercy, has a long proud history on what is now an urban site. The school was under pressure to expand and modernise facilities, but recognised the importance of doing so in a managed way to protect its valuable outdoor space and heritage buildings. The project entailed the design of a broad Masterplan identifying potential for campus development and renewal. The first phase comprised the renovation and re-planning of the original schoolhouse for the Intermediate School; and a new teaching and sports wing for the High School. Conservation sensitivities ensured that the original schoolhouse received only much-needed maintenance and sympathetic renovation externally. Internally the building now maximises and simplifies the functioning of space, with a new principal’s office, staff lounge, administration offices, and improved support facilities to the classrooms. Acoustic drywalling minimised disturbance to the original timber floors, and the choice of joinery and finishes are harmonious with the original structure. The High School block was carefully inserted over existing staff parking along the road edge with minimal disruption to ongoing schooling. This wing faces the existing hall, creating a protected courtyard for the school, and a new heart and outdoor gathering space.

The new building connects to the existing school at a stair knuckle, and an entrance and circulation volume at the opposite end marks the extension and boldly holds the quad in front. Whilst the architectural aesthetic is respectful of its context in scale and material selection, marrying with the existing buildings, the clerestorey roof design and performance glazed fenestration placement read as a more modern environment. The High School wing comprises lower ground parking, four classrooms, two science labs, and a large multi-purpose hall planned flexibly to accommodate a range of activities from indoor sport to exam hall.

It is my pleasure to write on behalf of Inclusive Design Architects. My experience working with Inclusive Design Architects has been excellent. They are true professionals who bring important construction knowledge and outstanding management skills to their projects. I have worked with Andrew Wood on many Multichoice projects. - NMS Properties - Multichoice
I would highly recommend the use of the Inclusive Design Architects (IDA) for your building or design project. My wife and I have worked with Andrew and his team for the last year on a new custom home project and are extremely satisfied with their work. This is the first home construction project for us and Inclusive Design Architects (IDA) has turned a challenging process into very enjoyable experience. The key to their service is “one-stop” shopping for architectural design, interior design and builder selection. It is so much easier and cost effective, to have one team handle these critical steps of the process. Inclusive Design Architects (IDA) came highly recommended and they have met our expectations.

- JP Nobrega Chartered Accountants (Pty) Ltd
As a current Client it gives me great pleasure to write a letter of recommendation in support of Inclusive Design Architects (IDA).  I would highly recommend the use of Inclusive Design Architects (IDA) for any building, urban design or design project. IDA was appointed to assist with an extensive turnkey project to the value of approximately R 45 000 000. The project time-frame for renovation was effectively 3 months to handover.  IDA and Andrew as Principle approached the project with the utmost professionalism and played a critical role in ensuring that the building renovation was completed on-time and on-budget.

- Pharmacy Direct (Pty) Ltd

He has the ability to not only complete a fast-moving business deal, but to keep his team focused to the end of a project.

- U.R.E Projects (Pty) Ltd
Inclusive Design Architects (IDA) came highly recommended and they have not only met expectations but have exceeded them by far due to their ability to assimilate the objectives of the project and the vision of the Client.  Andrew and his team would be of great value to any project.
